The Victoria Model Shipbuilding Society will be taking part in the 2008 edition of the Tall Ships festival from June 26th to 29th. There will be static and radio remote controlled boats on display featuring beautiful hand-crafted ships, tug boats from the 12 inch "Thomas" to the larger 1 metre boats, sailing yachts, pleasure craft, and barges. Children will be encouraged to participate in the popular Paddle Boat races held every hour during operating hours, prizes will be given for 1st 2nd and 3rd places. You may even get a chance to operate one of the club's radio controlled boats. (The club regrets that it cannot allow children under the age of 16 to operate the radio controlled boats.)

Ernest Reid ecreid@shaw.ca Hello there. My name is Greg Abbott. I'm contacting you in regards to an event that a group of us are planning for September 13th at the Beacon Hill Park Bandshell. Earth dance is a global event (last year it was celebrated simultaneously in over 200 cities in over 30 countries) that celebrates global community, music and dance. The Victoria group is focussing to make an earth positive impact, with equal focus and energy being directed towards local community inclusion, family, youth and elders and creating opportunitites for future connections and events. My current positon with this group is in community outreach, and in line with that I would like the chance to get input and feedback from your organization. Any assistance and/or information that you could provide us with to help make this a fun and positively memorable event would be greatly appreciated. My thanks in advance; Greg J. Abbott

Battle of the Atlantic Commemeration – May 4th
Victoria Model Shipbuilding Society (VMSS) will again be commemorating the Battle of the Atlantic* with a major regatta to the Harrison Model Boat Pond (Dallas Road at Government Street) on Sunday, May 4th from 10 am to12 pm.
At 11 am there will be a minute of silence in remembrance to those who gave their lives in this epic Battle. This will be followed by a sail past of radio controlled model ships. The highlight models will be Britain’s battle cruiser HMS Hood, the German battleship Bismarck, and a number of submarines. Leading the sail past will be a model of the Royal Canadian Navy’s corvette HMCS Shediac, the work horse on escort duty for Merchant shipping crossing the Atlantic during WW2. Another interesting model will be a Liberty ship, many of which transported good and arms to war torn Britain during the 1940’s. Second World War music will be played during the sail past with songs by the sweetheart of all the WW2 armed forces, Dame Vera Lynn.
After the sail past, there will be displays and races by tugs ranging in size from one foot to four feet long. Added attractions will be the rescue of a drifting freighter, log retrieval, a steering course, and a conning course. A number of sailboats will hold informal races.
Mark the date on your calendar, Sunday May 4th 10 am and come and help VMSS commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic where so many gave their lives and rest today in Davy Jones’ Locker.
*The Battle of the Atlantic was an epic struggle to maintain Britain’s lifeline during World War Two. Without this lifeline to and from North America, Britain would have been literally starved into submission. The biggest threat to this lifeline was the German U-boat fleet. On Sept 3rd 1939, the British liner Athenia was torpedoed by a U-boat and the Battle of the Atlantic commenced.

UVic Unity is an overnight workshop-retreat from May 2nd to 4th, involving a series of interactive presentations and workshops designed to engage youth interested in community activism and advocacy. This event is open to all mature youth of high-school age, of any and all sexual orientations and gender identities. The workshops are facilitated by local community & campus organizations, including such university groups as the Women's Centre, Students Of Colour Collective, Anti-Violence Project, Equity & Human Rights Office, Native Student's Union, Access, Resource Centre for Students with a Disability, and Counseling Services. UVic Unity focuses on educating students about the personal, community, and advocacy issues that affect both society and queer/trans persons today. Topics explored include the effects of homophobia, transphobia, racism, disability, and violence in society – with a focus on promoting positive peer interaction skills and community leadership. The retreat also introduces students to the other advocacy and service organizations at UVic, and assists them in better understanding and feeling comfortable with campus life in general. "Last year, the most popular event of the entire weekend was definitely the photo-scavenger hunt," says Uvic Unity coordinator, Kelley Logue. "If you ever saw a bunch of kids running around the campus in pirate, butterfly, bunny and princess get-ups, it was probably us. "Though," she adds, "anyone in a toga was most likely just one of the engineers…" The cost this year is $15 per youth, thanks to the financial support of UVic Pride, the University of Victoria Student's Society, and other groups. This includes meals and 2-nights' stay in a private room in the retreat's supervised campus residence. There are also a limited number of spaces available for youth workers (teachers, counselors, youth leaders) interested in participating in special adult-themed workshops. These are on a case-by-case basis, and cost the full price of an overnight campus residence stay ($25.50/night). "Last year's event was very successful and positively-received," says Logue, "and we hope to be able to reach out to an even wider audience this year." ##### The retreat website includes all important policy guidelines and registration info, at <uvic.unity.googlepages.com>. Contact UVc Unity facilitator Kelley Logue at Uvic.Unity@gmail.com or call the UVic Pride office at (250) 472-4393 for more information. The group has a variety of posters and pamphlets available, as well as a volunteer Outreach Team able to travel to local schools and organizations. Dear neighbour and concerned citizen: Last July there was a public meeting to see how JB community members felt about Spinnakers opening a liquor outlet in the mall. Part of the condition was that it was not 'near schools'. I for one, consider the mall a place near to schools (nothing is far from anywhere in JB). That application was declined but guess what.
I think it is timely for the community at large to be aware of the turn-around that city council has taken regarding the application for another liquor sales outlet in James Bay 475 Simcoe Street. I spoke with Brian Sikstrom at city hall and he said that it doesn't happen often but that the council did decide they would accept an amended application with a covenant on it and reconsider an application that was declined in July after a public meeting at city hall.
Hi Kurt, Hi: I would like to see some feedback from some of your other readers regarding the unprecedented growth and construction in James Bay. This has occured over the last several years without a marked increase in services. It was my understanding that before the City approved new construction, they had to be satisfied that the infrastructure was there to support the increase in density.
Would any one like to have their home professionally designed by an interior designer?
